New Zealand Wildfires Destroy Homes and Forces Evacuations
Wellington, Feb 16 (Prensa Latina) The New Zeland Civilian Defence confirmed one deade and one thousand evacuated because of the wild fires in Port Hills,near the city of Christchurch.
According to the sources the authorities have evacuated 400 houses located near two fires that got out of control and up to now one thousand and 75 hectáreas have been destroyed.
Around 130 firemen,plus 14 helicopters and 3 planes have been deployed to the area at Port Hills, where two days ago died pilot Steve Askin.
The government of Wellington declared the state of emergency
in Christchurch and Selwyn and are monitoring the situation because if the wind increases the fires will also increase and could push towards the residential areas.
Prime Minister Bill English,said that investigations are underway to determined the causes for those fires that look suspiciuos.
Such ferocious wildfires are rare in New Zealand as regular rainfall usually prevents them from reaching the intensity seen in neighboring Australia.
