According to the La Prensa newspaper, those measures seek to prevent the outbreaks from damaging the existing installed capacity in the most important public healthcare centers of the country, such as the Social Security Fund (CSS) Complex, the Santo Tomas and the San Miguel Arcangel, in the populous district of San Miguelito.
Despite the daily rise of cases (from 800 to 900), sector officials report that the availability of beds is around 50 percent in most hospitals.
However, some healthcare officials fear that this percentage could increase given the current growing trend of new infections, of which between 10 and 15 percent could require hospitalization, according to experts’ estimates.
The report presented yesterday by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) referred that Panama has a bed occupancy rate of 54 percent at the national level, while the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) occupancy rate is 48 percent.
In the last 24 hours, the country registered 1,488 Covid-19 cases, a figure not reported since the beginning of March, when it managed to control the second wave (November 2020-February 2021), considered by local specialists as the one with the greatest impact due to the number of patients and deaths.
