China calls US to strengthen climate cooperation

Beijing, Sep 2 (Prensa Latina) China on Thursday called the United States to strengthen climate cooperation in the Paris Agreement and together provide solutions to the problems affecting the planet, as a result of the impact of increasingly extreme phenomena.

Vice Premier Han Zheng stressed US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Change John Kerry the importance of implementing not only that document but also the bilateral consensus about the issue to effectively address the environmental crisis.

According to Han, China’s climate goals, especially cutting CO2 emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, demonstrate its commitment to take concrete steps in this regard.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed himself in similar terms, and affirmed that as great powers, Beijing and Washington have the responsibility to understand each other and define, through respectful dialogue, strategies aimed at solving ecological problems.

Meanwhile, Kerry agreed that China-US collaboration is crucial to make progress in the fight against climate change and expressed the White House’s willingness to also strengthen bilateral communication.

The US official has been visiting China for the second time this year since Tuesday and his agenda includes talks with his local counterpart Xie Zhenhua, in Tianjin.

The talks will conclude on Friday and include the exchange of views prior to the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), scheduled for November in Glasgow, Scotland.

Kerry’s previous trip here was in April, thus becoming the first senior Biden administration official to visit China.
