Cuba defends solidarity, multilateralism ahead of global challenges

Paris, Nov 12 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's Education Minister Ena Elsa Velázquez urged at UNESCO for solidarity and multilateralism as responses to global challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change.

When speaking at the session on General Policy of UNESCO´s 41st General Conference, the Cuban minister stressed that fighting the pandemic has expressed in definite terms the emergency for the unity, cooperation and international solidarity, as well as the valuable contribution from multilateral organizations.

According to Ms. Velázquez, it is also critical to outlay on education, cultural diversity, heritage protection and safeguarding, scientific research as well as the reduction of technological gap, in order to make sustainable and inclusive development a reality.

“Special attention should be given to the most vulnerable, including small island developing states,” she said.

The Cuban minister praised UNESCO’s leadership and role ahead of humanity’s challenges, and also highlighted the efforts to guarantee inclusive and equitable quality education, as well as promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

In this regard, Ms. Velazquez stated that education must continue being top priority for both political and financial commitments, and she also regarded as unacceptable how millions of children continue with no access to education.

Ms. Velázquez assured that the Cuban Revolution was decisive so that Cuba could make the commitments taken with UNESCO as a reality.
