Damascus, Dec 29 (Prensa Latina) Israel intended to shake Syria’s economy when it attacked the commercial port of Latakia with missiles, having failed militarily, official sources denounced.

According to Damascus, yesterday’s attack caused large material losses at the port and damaged nearby buildings and properties.

The site attacked is not a military zone but a port facility where imported cargo is delivered to traders and civilians, and Israel attacked Syria’s economy when the country is recovering its productive capability, said the head of Customs Committee, Imad Al-Qabbani.

The official explained that 85% of the goods at the place of the attack is food and raw materials needed for the industry and the process of reconstruction.

This criminal action affects the availability of basic materials in the markets and raw materials needed by factories, since the commodities shipped in take a long time to arrive in Syria due to the blockade, al-Qabbani said.

Yasser Akrim, member of the Board of Directors of the Damascus Chamber of Commerce, denounced that Israel is waging an economic and actual war with Syria, and qualified the attack as “despicable” and “cowardly”, rejected by all religions and laws, aimed at damaging the livelihood of Syrian citizens.

The Syrian government condemned Israel’s attacks and deplored the silence of the United Nations in response to these actions. In addition it ratified the right to defend the integrity and sovereignty of the national territory by all legitimate means.
