African Union suspends Burkina Faso after coup d’Etat

Unión AFricana, Burkina, Faso, sanciones
Addis Ababa, Feb 1 (Prensa Latina) Burkina Faso has been suspended from all activities in the African Union (AU) as of this Tuesday, due to the coup d'Etat perpetrated on January 24 that overthrew President Roch Marc Christian Kabore.

Adopted by the AU Peace and Security Council, the sanction came a week after a military junta deposed Christian Kabore after about 24 hours of fighting near the presidential palace in Ouagadougou.

The suspension, the third of its kind in less than a year after those adopted against Mali and Guinea, where military forces struck in May and September 2021, respectively, was announced on Twitter.

The Council decides to suspend Burkina Faso’s participation in all AU activities until the constitutional order is effectively restored in the country, states the publication of the organ in charge of the security issues in the AU.

Immediately after the violent and illegal usurpation of the Government in the West African state, AU Commission chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat “strongly condemned the coup attempt against the democratically democratically-elected president.”

Like the AU, the Economic Community of West African States condemned the coup and suspended Burkina Faso, now led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba, who ordered to suspend the Constitution, dissolve the National Assembly and close borders.
