WFP calls for urgent funding for millions of hungry Afghans

PMA; Afganistán, ayuda, niños, hambre
Kabul, Feb 1 (Prensa Latina) The World Food Program (WFP) requested urgent funding to boost aid operations for 8.7 million hungry Afghans.

The WFP announced that it needs 2.6 billion dollars to deal with the humanitarian crisis, as the harsh winter further deteriorates the situation in Afghanistan, according to the Khaama Press agency.

The WFP spokeswoman for Afghanistan, Shelley Thakral, said it is a race against time and she is worried they will not be able to keep up.

“We’re underfunded and we’re asking for 2.6 billion dollars to scale up aid properly in 2022, which is about 30 cents a day per person we need to reach and we’re nowhere near that,” Thakral said.

The official noted that more than half of the Afghan population is food insecure, while 8.7 million people are at risk of starvation.

The WFP spokeswoman also expressed concern about power cuts in Afghanistan and that people do not have money to buy firewood or fuel.

Thakral pointed out that there are fewer job opportunities and industries are paralyzed, forcing people to sell their personal items.
