UN warning if countries fail to comply with climate action

United Nations, Apr 4 (Prensa Latina) UN Secretary General, António Guterres, assured today that failure to comply with climate action commitments is leading humanity towards a planet where it will be impossible to live.

In the video message sent to the press conference of the third report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he pointed out that this document shows a litany of unfulfilled promises.

Currently, he said, we live in a climate emergency, but governments and corporations with high emissions continue to ignore the problem and what they do is add fuel to the fire.

Climate activists are sometimes branded as dangerous radicals, when the truly dangerous radicals are the countries that increase the production of fossil fuels, stressed the highest representative of the United Nations.

“Investing in new fossil fuel infrastructure is morally and economically insane,” he stressed.

In that sense, the UN head official called on UN member states to triple the speed of the switch to renewable energy and end the financing of coal production.

According to the IPCC report, unless countries redouble their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the planet will warm an average of 2.4 to 3.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, with serious consequences for everyone.

According to the report, limiting global warming to about 1.5 degrees Celsius will require global greenhouse gas emissions to peak “before 2025 at the latest, and to be reduced by 43 percent by 2030.”

Meanwhile, he adds, current climate commitments would mean a 14 percent increase in emissions.
