Congress on Farming Biotechnology held in Cuba

Varadero, Cuba, Jun 8 (Prensa Latina) The 2022 BioCubaAgro Congress, currently on its third day, is attended by high level experts from 18 countries who are discussing paramount topics of farming biotechnology.

Organized by the Biocubafarma business group, the congress has been held since Monday and will run through Friday at the Plaza America Conference Center in Varadero.

Besides lectures, there will be a commercial exhibition of agrobiotechnological products from different enterprises, such as the National Center of Biopreparations, the University of Havana, Labiofam and the Center of Scientific Research, among others.

One of the lecturers, Marc Van Montagu, professor emeritus at Ghent University in Belgium and awarded the World Food Prize, spoke about the use of science to achieve a sustainable lifestyle on the planet.

For his part, Mario Pablo Estrada, director of Farming Research at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, gave an overview of farming products and research projects developed by this high tech enterprise in Cuba. He noted that food production for human beings is currently a challenge due to adverse weather conditions, wars and pandemics, whose effects bring about higher food prices.

“Scientific-technical solutions are necessary for sustainable food production. They are necessary both for Cuba and the world,” he said.
