President Luis Abinader described Türk’s statements as ‘unacceptable and irresponsible’ and clarified that each country’s migration policy is under its governments’ authority.
Commenting on the issue, the president assured that not only they will continue to repatriate Haitian citizens who are illegally in the country but also he said, the deportations will increase from next week.
He stressed that his country has borne the economic burden faced with the Haitian situation and is also the most supportive nation globally with the Haitian people.
In the communique issued on Thursday, the UN representative recalled that armed violence and human rights violations in Haiti do not allow safe and dignified return of its citizens to the country and called on Dominican authorities to prevent xenophobia, discrimination, and racial or ethnic intolerance.
Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, has been plunged into a social, economic, political, and violent crisis, aggravated following the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.
