Bolivian head of State’s opinion arose in response to the announcement of an administrative investigation of the Colombian National Electoral Council (CNE) to the electoral campaign of the current President Gustavo Petro and members of his cabinet for allegedly violating legal expense limits.
“This offensive against Colombian democracy is part of a broader strategy orchestrated by the right-wing across the region, seeking to weaken the social and political gains achieved by popular movements and promoting a setback in rights and social justice,” Arce posted on his social media.
In this regard, Petro stated that the CNE’s decision is “the first step of a coup d’état” against him.
On this basis, the Colombian Executive Branch announced on Wednesday that it appealed before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for this determination, considering that it violates the popular vote that elected Petro president in 2022.
Petro and some leaders of his campaign team are accused of allegedly violating the spending limit of about US$925,000.
According to this allegation, the leftist leader is exposed to economic fines and loss of office.
According to Colombian law, the CNE may forward a copy of the investigation to the House of Representatives so that the president may be impeached.
