Safe Return Plan Launched in Honduras After Easter Holiday

Tegucigalpa, April 19 (Prensa Latina) Honduran authorities launched the Safe Return Plan today, designed to guarantee the safety of travelers at the end of the long Easter holiday period.

Through the National Directorate of Roads and Transportation (DNVT), the National Police launched this Saturday the security operation for the safe return of vacationers to the capital of the Central American nation, which will extend until Sunday afternoon.

The first safe return caravan, coming from several departments (regions) in the north of the country, entered Tegucigalpa in the early hours of the morning, the police reported.

Police patrols are leading these caravans on various highways throughout the country.

“The idea is to ensure a safe return home. We remind families that they are waiting for their loved ones, so they can return to work and school starting Monday,” César Aguilar, deputy inspector of the National Police, told reporters.

Aguilar reiterated his call for citizens to exercise caution and noted that traffic accidents remain the second leading cause of death in Honduras.

The deputy inspector recommended avoiding nighttime trips, as many roads lack adequate conditions and sufficient lighting.

“The message remains clear: caution behind the wheel can save lives. Drive responsibly and respect other road users,” the official emphasized.

According to preliminary data from the DNVT (National Autonomous University of Honduras), approximately 3,500 driver’s licenses were confiscated during the Holy Week holiday, as part of the efforts to reduce road accidents.

More than 160 car accidents were reported last week, resulting in two deaths, the report stated.

One of the most worrying factors highlighted by authorities has been driving under the influence of alcohol, which has led to numerous license confiscations.

“So far, 350 drivers have been sanctioned for drunk driving, which represents a serious offense that carries a six-month license revocation and a minimum wage fine for first-time offenders,” Aguilar explained.

In cases of repeat offenses, the penalty is aggravated, with the license confiscation extended to one year and the fine doubled to two minimum wages.

The National Commission for the Prevention of Mass Mobilizations, made up of various institutions, will provide its final report tomorrow on all incidents that occurred during Holy Week.
