Haiti: Ports and customs under state control

Port-au-Prince, May 29 (Prensa Latina) Haitian Defense Minister Jean Michel Moise assured that the state now controls all ports and customs posts in this Caribbean country, including Malpasse, which was attacked on May 23 and until recently was controlled by gang members.

The bandits attacked Malpasse on the Haitian-Dominican border with automatic weapons, mercilessly firing at the authorities, destroying official documents, and stealing three trucks of merchandise that had previously been seized.

The criminals attacked the port, schools, universities, police stations, prisons, ministries, bank branches, community warehouses, the National Printing Office, and set fire to a 96,000-square-meter warehouse in the free zone.

They also attacked private cars, a religious seminary, Haiti’s first Baptist Church, and more than a dozen pharmacies.

In April 2024, in a demonstration that they meant business, they burnt down the home of Frantz Elbe, the then-commander-in-chief of the Haitian National Police.

Their record became even more notorious when they opened fire on a Spirit Airlines plane while it was landing, and which had to land in the Dominican Republic with a wounded stewardess.

Following the attack, an inspection of aircraft flying to Port-au-Prince was conducted, and it was discovered that the gangsters had already bored holes in a Jet Blue plane and on another one belonging to American Airlines company. jrr/jdt/jcm/joe
