Vietnam validates reputation for high-complexity medical procedures

Hanoi, May 29 (Prensa Latina) Vietnam's growing reputation for highly complex medical procedures has gained another boost following the successful intrauterine cardiac surgery performed at Ho Chi Minh City Children's Hospital.

The operation was performed on Wednesday on a 41-year-old Singaporean mother whose 22-week-old fetus suffered from a serious congenital heart condition.

Vietnamese specialists coordinated an online consultation with experts from Australia and France, in which all agreed on the seriousness of the case and the urgency of performing an intervention to save the fetus’s life.

This was the ninth fetal operation performed in Ho Chi Minh City, and also the most technically complex so far due to the young gestational age of the fetus (barely 22 weeks and weighing only 600 grams) and the severity of the diagnosis: aortic atresia, a rare and potentially life-threatening condition.

The fact that a referral hospital in Singapore decided to refer the patient to Vietnam demonstrates confidence in Ho Chi Minh City’s medical capabilities, as well as regional recognition of Vietnam’s advancements in fetal medicine, the VNA news agency reported.

According to the source, this case represents a key milestone in the development of fetal medicine in Vietnam and reaffirms Ho Chi Minh City’s goal of establishing itself as a leading medical center in Southeast Asia for specialized and highly complex procedures.
