Chilean teachers call national strike to improve working conditions

Santiago, Chile, May 29 (Prensa Latina) The Chilean Teachers' College is preparing a 48-hour strike for June 4-5, given the Education Ministry's insufficient response to a six-item list.

The lack of progress in talks with authorities deepens the labor precariousness and the crisis of the educational system, the union warned in a statement.

During the strike, teachers will hold a march in Valparaiso and gather outside the National Congress headquarters to demand solutions to six items of the so-called “short agenda.”

Among the demands are the Teacher Tenure Law, changing the professional career, ceasing violence in classrooms, reducing work burden, strengthening the head teacher’s role, and improving public education.

This will be the second educators’ rally, after the one held on May 15, which included demonstrations in several cities and communes.
