OCHA warns of increasing sexual violence in eastern DRC

Kinshasa, May 30 (Prensa Latina) Sexual violence is increasing in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned.

An OCHA report stated that humanitarian partners reported more than 67,000 cases of gender-based violence between January and April this year across the country, representing a 38 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

OCHA drew attention to the fact that more than 90 percent of the cases nationwide are located in the eastern provinces of the DRC, the most affected by the conflict, and where the response is further hampered by insecurity and aid cuts.

Another aspect is that only 58 percent of the victims of documented incidents received adequate medical care within the 72 hours.

The situation is complex in eastern Congo, where humanitarian partners working in the health sector reported that several healthcare centers in South Kivu province are facing shortages of post-exposure prophylaxis kits, mainly due to security restrictions.
