“We are moving towards combat readiness as the primary objective of our armed forces,” he declared at a press conference in Glasgow.

Starmer added that Britain’s security will be based on collaboration with NATO allies and assured that London will never fight alone. “Our defense policy will always be primarily focused on NATO,” he indicated, maintaining that the alliance is a fundamental source of strategic strength for the United Kingdom.

On May 15th, the defense ministers of Germany and the United Kingdom announced that their countries will work together to develop a new European precision-deep strike capability, with a range of more than 2,000 kilometers, to strengthen NATO’s deterrence, among other objectives.

Germany and the United Kingdom signed a defense cooperation agreement in October 2024.

A similar treaty, signed in December 1987 between the then USSR and the United States, banned ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers.

On August 2nd, 2019, United States definitively withdrew from the agreement, claiming that Russia was violating it.

Russia also suspended its commitment in response to US actions. Russia also assured that it does not wish to engage in a new arms race and maintains its disarmament proposals, while waiting for the other side to enter into talks.
