AU senior officials address Africa’s security and peace scenario

Luanda, Jun 3 (Prensa Latina) Joao Lourenco, President of Angola and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), and Bankole Adeoye, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security of that regional organization, addressed the situation on the continent, local press informed on Tuesday.

The meeting was focused on the security, peace, and governance scenario on the continent, Adeoye said at the end of the gathering held at the Presidential Palace in Cidade Alta on Monday.

Lourenco and Adeoye discussed in detail the map of conflicts in the different African regions, highlighting the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Central African Republic, and the Sahel region, among others; in addition to the challenges posed by scourges such as terrorism.

The AU commissioner stated, “These are issues that concern us and must be addressed by silencing the guns.”

The Nigerian diplomat presented to Lourenco, on behalf of AU Commission (AUC) Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, an overview of the situation on the continent and proposed African solutions to existing problems.

Adeoye stressed the Angolan president’s leadership in advocating for peace and reconciliation in Africa, in particular the efforts to resolve conflict in the DRC, the Central African Republic, the Sahel region as a whole, as well as in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique.
