Uruguay’s Senate put off vote on Professional Fund

Montevideo, June 6 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan Senate is continuing to debate a bill to save the University Professionals' Retirement and Pension Fund.

The special committee discussing the matter postponed the vote until next week, when it is anticipated that the Fund will be unable to meet its commitments starting in July.

“Senator Graciela Bianchi of the National Party officially requested that the ruling coalition grant an extension until Tuesday, ‘to utilize the weekend and Monday for additional work on pending matters.'”

According to the legislator, there is agreement within the opposition with “a large part of the bill” approved in general by the deputies. However, she noted that specific proposals remain to be finalized “for us as a coalition.”

“We are very concerned about expanding the contributor base, because the solutions to the Professionals’ Fund require structural reform,” she said at a press conference.

For Frente Amplio Senator Eduardo Brenta, it is necessary to prioritize the possibility of reaching a broad agreement.

“The first thing is to give sustainability to the Fund and then move on to structural aspects of reform, which can be addressed within the framework of discussion on social security,” he said, regarding the possibility of continuing the talks in the medium term.
