Palestine calls historic ILO’s decision

Ramallah, Jun 7 (Prensa Latina) Palestine welcomed the decision of the International Labor Organization (ILO) to upgrade its membership from national liberation movement to observer state, despite Israel's attempts to prevent the move.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs described the decision as historic “after years of diplomatic efforts”.

The Foreign Ministry said the decision grants Palestine expanded rights as an observer, including voting, being placed on the speakers’ list for all items, making statements on behalf of groups, submitting and co-sponsoring proposals and amendments, responding to and raising procedural motions, among others.

In addition, it added, it balances Palestine’s status in the ILO with its membership in other institutions such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The Ministry commended the positions of the countries that expressed their support for this resolution while calling on the rest to review their positions and join the majority of the world.

It stressed that this measure is important to preserve the rights of the Palestinian people in their struggle for independence.
