President Gustavo Petro ordered an investigation into the reason why the congressman’s security detail was reduced from seven to three people on the day of the attack.

The director of the National Protection Unit (UNP), Augusto Rodríguez, stated that the senator’s security detail is mixed and includes four police officers and three members of the UNP. He confirmed that last Saturday there were fewer people than expected, and that the event organized in Modelia, in the western neighborhood of the capital, where the senator was shot, was not coordinated with either the police or the UNP.

The director of the National Police, General Carlos Fernando Triana Beltrán, confirmed that a disciplinary investigation has been opened to examine the actions of four police officers who were part of the candidate’s security detail at the time of the incident. He stated that those involved in the investigation are not only analyzing the officers’ behavior, but are also verifying the requirements and instructions issued in this case.

Regarding the order to extend protection to opposition members, Beltrán confirmed that the police are conducting a risk assessment of all candidates, pre-candidates, and political leaders who have expressed their decision to participate in the electoral debate.

The officer assured that the security arrangements at both their residences and political headquarters are being reviewed. He also revealed that a retraining program for police personnel has begun and that work is being done to adjust the protection arrangements. He mentioned that law enforcement is seeking to concrete new arrangements to prevent any risk.
