“It is not about confrontations between armies, but about a systematic, prolonged and disproportionate attack against a trapped population, without access to water, food, medicines, safe shelter, or other essential services that condemns them to starvation and death”, the letter states.
It indicates that “the deliberate destruction of the health system in Gaza is not collateral damage,” but is “a strategy of annihilation,” which “constitutes a war crime and a violation of international humanitarian law.”
“Hospitals, health centers and ambulances have been destroyed, leaving the population with no possibility of medical care. Health personnel, volunteers and volunteers have been systematically killed while carrying out their humanitarian duty,” the signatories asserted.
Among them were the Secretary of Care and Disability, Susana Muñiz; the Broad Front deputy, Federico Preve; the director of the National Institute for Women, Mónica Xavier; and the former Minister of Defense, José Bayardi.
Also the former Undersecretary of the Ministry of Public Health, Miguel Fernández Galeano; and the President of the Uruguayan Medical Association, Alvaro Niggemeyer.
