Cambodia supports UN resolution for ceasefire in Gaza

Phnom Penh, Jun 16 (Prensa Latina) Cambodia today expressed its support for the United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional and lasting ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.

The UN General Assembly on Thursday adopted the non-binding resolution, urging an end to hostilities in Gaza, the immediate release of all hostages and full humanitarian access to assist civilians in need.

Despite opposition from the United States, Israel and some other countries, the resolution passed with 149 votes in favor, 12 against and 19 abstentions.

The resolution strongly condemns the use of famine as a weapon of war and reaffirms Israel’s responsibility, as the occupying power, to ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid.

As a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), Cambodia has consistently supported peaceful resolutions to the conflict in Gaza.

Kin Phea, director general of the Institute of International Relations at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said the Asian country’s stance on all international conflicts remains steadfast in the pursuit of peace.

The vote in favor of the ceasefire, according to Phea, reflects Cambodia’s desire to end the violence and serves as a call to uphold basic human rights, including the right to life.
