Meloni outlines in Parliament Italy’s position at NATO-EU summits

Rome, Jun 24 (Prensa Latina) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni outlined on Tuesday in Parliament her country's position in the upcoming North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and European Union (EU) summits.

In her speech, Meloni reaffirmed her Monday remarks in the Chamber of Deputies regarding the complexity of the current international context, which “has worsened in the last few hours following the US attack on three Iranian nuclear plants.”

Those speeches were made just before the Italian prime minister’s departure this Tuesday afternoon for The Hague, the Netherlands, where the NATO meeting will be held until Wednesday, June 25.

This meeting follows the gathering of the EU heads of State and Government in Brussels, Belgium, on June 26-27.

A statement on Meloni’s address released by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers before the Italian Parliament emphasized, “We all fully understand the enormous potential risks posed by further destabilization of an already severely affected region.”

Regarding the US attack on Iran on June 22, she confirmed what had been previously stated by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Defense Minister Guido Crosetto that “No US aircraft took off from Italian bases.”

“Our nation did not participate in any way in the military operation,” the head of Government stated and emphasized, “We are convinced that only coordinated diplomatic action can guarantee peace in the region” and on the nuclear issue, Iran can “carry out a civilian program while guaranteeing the total absence of military purposes.”
