Cuba’s hero climbs Fidel Peak in Italy’s Alps (+Photos)

Rome, Jul 8 (Prensa Latina) Gerardo Hernandez, Hero of the Republic of Cuba, climbed to the summit of Fidel Peak in the Italian Alps, where a solidarity event with Cuba was held, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Cuban Ambassador to Italy, Mirta Granda, and members of the Italy-Cuba Friendship Association (ANAIC) participated in Monday’s long tour to reach the 1,600-meter-high summit named after the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro.

A tribute was paid to Fidel in front of the monument built in his memory, located on Mount Arpone in the northern region of Piedmont, in a moving ceremony also attended by Gabriela Gamez, third secretary of the Cuban mission, and ANAIC President Marco Papacci, the latter told Prensa Latina.

Gerardo Hernandez, one of the five Cuban heroes who suffered long years of confinement in US prisons for acting in defense of their country and people and the current national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), along with the other participants, unfurled a giant Cuban flag at those heights.

Hernandez, who is also a lawmaker and member of the Cuban Council of State, also thanked the Italian people for their friendship and support of his Revolution and people in the struggle they are waging to defend their revolutionary process.

Papacci underscored that the ANAIC members attending the ceremony reaffirmed their solidarity with the island and their commitment to new actions to denounce the criminal economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the US government and its unjust inclusion in Washington’s State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list.

During his visit to Italy, which will end on Wednesday, July 9, Gerardo Hernandez conducted a series of activities in Rome and several cities in the regions of Campania, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and Piedmont, where he participated in several meetings with friends of Cuba.
