Türkiye to keep presidential election schedule

Ankara, 9 Jul (Prensa Latina) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today ruled out any possibility of early elections, reaffirming that the presidential and legislative elections will be held in 2028, as stipulated by the national constitution.

There is no agenda for electoral changes, the Turkish president replied to opposition leader of the Republican Party (CHP) Özgür Özelen during a parliamentary session.

According to Erdogan, the municipal elections are still scheduled for 2029.

The CHP promotes early consultation due to the economic crisis in the Ottoman country, where the Turkish lira lost 40 percent of its value in 2024, and annual inflation exceeds 75 percent.

During the last general elections of 2023, the current president won victory, and thanks to a constitutional reform in 2017, he extended his term to 5 years.

Local analysts consider that the policies of the current government seek stability while the opposition takes advantage of social unrest, supported by certain media that criticize the concentration of executive power in Turkey.
