Panamanian educators await solutions to insurance claim

Panama City, July 11 (Prensa Latina) After more than 70 days of an indefinite strike, Panamanian teachers' unions are awaiting solutions to their claims regarding an insurance law and administrative measures adopted, such as salary withholding and replacement in the classroom.

With the goal of returning to normalcy for the school year, the topic will be the focus of talks convened this Friday by the President of the National Assembly (parliament), Jorge Herrera, with the heads of the parliamentary groups, the minister of the branch, Lucy Molinar, and representatives of various teacher organizations, despite the government’s rejection.

Yesterday, in his regular weekly press conference, the President of the Republic, Jose Raul Mulino, rejected the teachers’ request for payment of salaries withheld during the strike, stating that this decision will set a precedent so that situations like these do not occur again.

He also instructed Molinar to ensure that the replacements made to date remain in their positions, but invited the teachers to return to classes.

Mulino also indicated that he has no problem with the Legislature organizing a discussion with the teachers, as this body is free to hold meetings with whomever it deems necessary.

However, he believes a “tough” precedent must be set to ensure that no more games are played with education.
