Speaking to the ARD newspaper, Wadephul highlighted Merz’s key role in convincing Washington to maintain military assistance.
The diplomat affirmed that all of Europe supports Ukraine, and the United States will also continue its aid.
The foreign minister revealed that Merz had direct contact with Trump, including a meeting in the Oval Office and phone calls during the Group of Seven (G7) summit.
The federal chancellor made it clear that Germany needs the United States on this issue, explained Wadephul, who described the rapprochement between the two leaders as reasonable.
Analysts see these statements as an attempt by Berlin to show influence over Washington, after months of tensions due to Trump’s skepticism toward the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
