Dominicans to remember Martinique intellectual Frantz Fanon

Santo Domingo, July 20 (Prensa Latina) The organization Accion Afro-Dominicana will commemorate the centennial of the birth of Martinique intellectual Frantz Fanon with a gathering, in homage to whom is considered "the decolonial hurricane of the Caribbean."

Accion Afro-Dominicana and the Multi-Thematic School will celebrate Fanon’s life next Wednesday in a gathering featuring Dominican intellectual Sophie Marinez, winner of the 2025 Frantz Fanon Prize, awarded by the Caribbean Philosophical Association.

Marinez, a resident of the United States, received the award for her book “Spirals in the Caribbean: Representing Violence and Connection in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.”

She was given the award for the depth of her studies, her commitment to truth, and her promotion of respect for human rights. On this occasion, the writer will read excerpts from Fanon’s “Black Skin, White Masks” and discuss its historical relevance.

Frantz Fanon, psychiatrist, philosopher, and revolutionary, analyzed the aftermath of colonialism and the need for radical decolonization that encompasses both political and mental structures.

Scholars of his work agree that his ideas constitute fundamental pillars for understanding decolonization, Afro-descendant identity, and the quest for comprehensive liberation, not only of bodies but also of minds.

Works like “Black Skin, White Masks” and “The Wretched of the Earth,” are studied for their relevance and relevance.
