Serbia: Student protests take a violent tone

Belgrade, July 23 (Prensa Latina) Student protesters in Serbia intensified their protests with targeted actions against figures close to President Aleksandar Vucic, local media reported.

In the city of Novi Sad, groups gathered outside the residence of European Integration Minister Nemanja Starovic, chanting aggressive slogans during the early hours of the morning.

Similar patterns were repeated outside the homes of former Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and Informer editor Dragan Vucicevic, where they attempted to force their way inside.

The Serbian Journalists’ Association condemned the events as acts of lynching, demanding an immediate response from the authorities.

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic described the protests as attempts at destabilization that could lead to civil conflict.

Meanwhile, European sectors, including French intellectuals in Le Monde, publicly support the protesters as a democratic movement.

Analysts point out that these actions mark an escalation of the protests that began eight months ago, now with elements of personal intimidation.

Vucic assured that the law will be applied against those responsible, amid growing political tensions.
