Government and opposition discuss citizen security in Uruguay

Montevideo, Jul 23 (Prensa Latina) Citizen security, the main concern of Uruguayans, will be the topic of discussion between the government of President Yamandú Orsi and the opposition with parliamentary representation.

To that end, Interior Minister Carlos Negro will meet with leaders of the political opposition as part of the strategy to outline a National Security Plan.

The Executive Branch also intends to involve social organizations in the fight against crime.

Negro will meet at the Executive Tower with the president of the National Party, Álvaro Delgado; the secretary general of the Colorado Party and senator, Andrés Ojeda; the leader of Cabildo Abierto, Guido Manini Ríos; the leader of the Independent Party, Pablo Mieres; and the leader of Identidad Soberana, Gustavo Salle.

The meeting comes after the release of the first half of the year crime report, which showed a 5,1% year-over-year decrease in reported crimes nationwide.

The report notes an increase in homicides against police officers and those carried out inside prisons.

According to the report, most crimes decreased, except for cattle rustling and fraud.

With the presentation of the report, the Ministry of the Interior launched a new method for measuring crime incidence that includes monitoring more than a dozen classifications.
