Tens of thousands of displaced persons reported in southern Syria

Damascus, July 27 (Prensa Latina) The representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Syria, Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, confirmed the displacement of nearly 176,000 people in the south of the country.

In statements released through his account on the social media platform X, the official urged the international community to increase humanitarian support given the severity of the crisis.

Vargas Llosa specified that UNHCR teams, in coordination with non-governmental organizations, have been able to assess the most urgent needs of the displaced, whose living conditions he described as extremely precarious.

“Many families have been forced to walk long distances in search of safety, and are currently completely dependent on humanitarian assistance,” the representative of the international organization emphasized.

According to the statement, UNHCR is working to strengthen its operations in cooperation with other humanitarian agencies through the distribution of emergency supplies, the provision of protection services, psychosocial support, and specific care for children affected by forced displacement.

To date, emergency relief supplies have been delivered to approximately 4,000 people, while assistance efforts continue in several affected areas.

The armed clashes that erupted on July 13 in the southern province of Sweida between local armed groups and tribal and Bedouin militias led to a rapid deterioration of the situation, with an estimated 1,300 civilian and military deaths, in addition to a massive wave of displacement.

In response to the emergency, the Syrian authorities established 79 temporary centers to accommodate displaced people fleeing conflict zones, while coordinating efforts to ensure minimum security conditions, food, and medical care.
