Argentina: Low spirits in celebration of National Culture Day

Buenos Aires, July 29 (Prensa Latina) Engulfed—many overwhelmed—by the whirlwind of harsh daily life, Argentines live this Tuesday without realizing that today is National Culture Day.

It was established in 1982 in honor of historian, journalist, poet, and essayist Ricardo Rojas, in commemoration of his death in 1957.

This year’s celebration takes place at a time when tempers in Argentina’s cultural sphere are currently frayed by the arrogant attack by President Javier Milei’s government in its crusade to cut public funds and its ideological offensive against historical institutions, theaters, cinema, and museums.

Even many media outlets, including state institutions, have overlooked the anniversary, which will pass as just another ordinary day.

The most stimulating thing for culture lovers, especially literature lovers, is the extensive program of activities at the Children’s and Young Adult Book Fair, which is in its final week and coincides with this commemoration.

The prestigious Argentine intellectual would be shocked at today’s situation his native land is gloing through.
