General transport strike in Uruguay

Montevideo, July 31 (Prensa Latina) Negotiations between employers and the union ended in a deadlock despite government mediation, and a general transport strike is underway in Uruguay.

Until the last minute, the Ministry of Labor mediated the day before between the transport company Copsa and the union, ATC, which is demanding 30% of the wages owed for June and all of July’s wages.

This non-payment situation has been dragging on, which is why last night the leader of the National Union of Transport Workers (Unott), Miguel Marrero, confirmed that “the 24-hour general strike will continue throughout the country” and that they will intensify their struggle.

“We were very close to reaching an agreement. The workers conceded a lot,” he said, adding that “once again, the company’s willingness was lacking.”

According to the union leader, the various branches will determine how to implement the strike.

Road transport companies announced they will operate normally, as did Cutcsa, another public transport operator in Montevideo, where service delays have been reported with fewer buses and taxis on the streets.

The president of the PIT-CNT, Marcelo Abdala, emphasized the union’s support for the Copsa and Unott workers, and for their right to receive their corresponding wages “in a timely manner.”
