Argentine scientists develop tuberculosis test

Buenos Aires, July 31 (Prensa Latina) Specialists from Argentina's National Scientific and Technical Research Council (Conicet) have developed a rapid, low-cost test called FluoTB to diagnose tuberculosis, local media reported.

Unlike conventional methods, FluoTB analyzes samples without the need of a bacteria culture to detect tuberculosis, according to the Argentine news agency Noticias Argentinas.

It also determines the infectious agent’s resistance to antibiotics, it is useful for monitoring treatment, and constitutes a promising tool for the pharmaceutical industry in the rapid evaluation of new anti-tuberculosis drugs, according to a note released by Conicet.

From that research center, currently a target of the severe austerity policies and funding cuts by the Javier Milei administration, they explained that tuberculosis is an infectious disease that is transmitted from person to person through the air, when someone who is sick coughs or sneezes.

According to official figures worldwide, nearly 3,500 people die from this disease every day, and nearly 30,000 are infected with this preventable and curable disease.

In Argentina, approximately 16,600 cases of tuberculosis were reported in 2024, of which approximately 84% were in people of working age (20 to 44 years old), according to Noticias Argentinas.
