The body, together with the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN), filed the indictment, which was accepted by the Belgian federal prosecutor in compliance with the country’s international obligations, according to a statement cited by the Belga news agency.
The ICC is already investigating possible serious violations of humanitarian law in the Palestinian territories, the Belgian Prosecutor’s Office stated in justifying its decision.
Legal analysts emphasize that this step could broaden the examination of Israeli military conduct, despite the fact that Israel does not recognize the jurisdiction of The Hague-based court.
The case comes as the ICC has been investigating possible war crimes by both sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since 2021.
European diplomatic sources suggest that the Belgian measure could spur similar actions in other EU member states.
Israel called the complaint “legal propaganda,” while Palestine hailed it as a step toward accountability.
