Syria receives gas from Azerbaijan to strengthen electric grid

Damascus, July 31 (Prensa Latina) Syrian authorities announced that starting next Sunday, the country will begin receiving 3.4 million cubic meters of natural gas per day from Azerbaijan, as part of an agreement aimed at improving the electricity supply.

Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir stated that the gas to be be transported through Turkiye will allow generating about 900 megawatts of electricity, what represents a substantial contribution in the context of the government’s efforts to guarantee basic services to the population.

This new step is part of the memorandum of understanding signed on July 12 between Damascus and Baku, which includes mechanisms for energy cooperation, natural gas supply, and coordination in the area of oil exploration.

The director of the National Electricity Company, Khaled Abu Day, stated that the arrival of the fuel will allow the electricity supply to be extended to approximately 10 hours per day, which represents a significant increase compared to the current average of five hours.

Abu Day assured that the technical infrastructure is fully prepared to receive the gas and activate the generating stations, which will begin operating immediately upon arrival.

He also emphasized that this progress will have a direct, positive impact on the daily lives of citizens throughout the country.

As part of its recovery and development strategy, the Syrian Ministry of Energy signed agreements with international companies worth seven billion dollars at the end of May for the construction of four combined-cycle power plants in the provinces of Deir Ezzor, Hama, Idlib, and Homs.
