Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that his country took note of the statements the acting president of the Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay made in favor of establishing ties with Beijing.
The Chinese spokesperson emphasized that a growing number of Paraguayan citizens and public figures have recognized in the last few years that maintaining a policy ignoring China’s reality isolates them on the international stage.
Guo reiterated his willingness to develop relations with all countries based on mutual respect and equality.
He also expressed that China welcomes visits by more Paraguayan representatives to the country to learn firsthand about its economic, social, and cultural development.
Paraguay is one of the 12 countries, and the only one in South America, that does not recognize the One China principle and therefore maintains diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
Paraguay getting ready to receive a visit this month by President Lai Ching-te; in the meantime, President Santiago Pena expressed he stands firm on keeping diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
