Dominican Republic immigration director warns of operations

Santo Domingo, August 2 (Prensa Latina) The Director General of Immigration of the Dominican Republic, Luis Rafael Lee Ballester, reiterated that operations against illegal immigrants will be intensified, especially in the border areas with Haiti, added the head of that body during a tour of the border provinces of Elias Pina and Dajabon.

Lee Ballester recommended that foreigners with irregular immigration status voluntarily leave the country and return to their country of origin.

Ballester that referred to the recent incorporation of 300 new Rapid Reaction Agents into the institution, for a total of 1,000, of which 750 are deployed in 19 provinces (out of 32), stated that with this personnel and members of the Army and other security agencies, interdictions will be increased.

The official explained that the institution is working on implementing a facial recognition system, currently in the testing phase, as part of a strategy to strengthen immigration controls through biometrics and the use of modern technologies.

During the supervisory tour, the vice admiral thanked the members of the Army, represented by its commander, Major General Ivan Camino Perez, and the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernandez Onofre, for their collaboration with Immigration.

More than 1,000 Haitian citizens without legal documents are deported daily by the General Directorate of Immigration, according to reports from the institution itself.
