UN Agency warns of famine in Afghanistan

Kabul, August 4 (Prensa Latina) The World Food Program (WFP) warned from Kabul that the hunger situation in Afghanistan is worsening daily.

In its latest report, this United Nations-affiliated agency stated that women, children, and returnees from neighboring countries are the most vulnerable groups.

The economic crisis, successive droughts, and the forced return of thousands of Afghan migrants have increased pressure on the country’s limited internal resources, further exacerbating the famine situation throughout the country, WFP Communications Officer Ziauddin Safi, stated.

Over the next six months, the World Food Program in Afghanistan will need nearly US$540 million to carry out its programs aimed at reaching the most vulnerable sectors, the official added.

The Afghan Ministry of Economy also believes that continued assistance from international relief organizations is beneficial to the country under the current conditions.

Humanitarian aid is an urgent and essential need under the current circumstances, particularly with the return of migrants from neighboring countries.

Therefore, we call on international relief organizations and the international community to continue providing humanitarian and emergency assistance to the people of Afghanistan, said Deputy Minister of Economy Abdul Latif Nazari.

Previously, the United Nations had requested more than $2 billion to provide aid to approximately 23 million people in Afghanistan.
