Petro affirms that Peru occupied Colombian territory in the Amazon

Bogota, Aug 5 (Prensa Latina) The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, rejected the occupation by the Peruvian government of a territory that he claims belongs to his country which, according to him, violates Rio de Janeiro Protocol signed between the two nations. In his account on the social network X, the president disclosed that for that reason the commemoration of the 206th Anniversary of the Battle of Boyaca will be held in the city of Leticia, capital of the southern department of Amazonas.

“Islands have appeared that are north of the current deepest line, and the government of Peru has just appropriated them by law and put the capital of a municipality in a land that, by treaty, should belong to Colombia,” wrote the ruler.

He also mentioned that the agreement signed between the two countries established that the border is the deepest line of the Amazon River and that any disagreement will be resolved between the parties.

“That unilateral and violating action of Rio de Janeiro treaty can make Leticia disappear as an Amazon port taking away its commercial life. The government will use, before anything else, diplomatic steps to defend national sovereignty”, he assured.
