The Apostle statue’s return to the place where it has been since 2017 is of extraordinary importance to us, Roberto Cano, solidarity coordinator of the Chilean-Cuban Culture Institute, which bears the hero’s name, told Prensa Latina.

The life-size standing bronze statue was created by Cuban sculptor Jose Ramon Villa Soberon, and its location in this emblematic neighborhood in Santiago is a symbol of friendship between the two nations.

At the base of the monument are fragments of the poet and revolutionary’s thoughts, among them the one who says, “I come from everywhere and everywhere I go, I am art among the arts, in the mountains, I am the mountain.”

There is also a quote from Nobel Prize winner for Literature Gabriela Mistral, who, without ever meeting him personally, described Marti as “the greatest man of our race.”

During a general blackout that affected much of the Chilean capital on February 25, 2025, unknown individuals attempted to tear down the monument, but were driven away by those with limited resources who were there at the moment.
