Argentine: Congress Uprising against Milei’s executive

Buenos Aires, Aug 7 (Prensa Latina) The opposition in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies repealed five presidential decrees, approved funds for pediatric health and university operation, and forced the debate of five other key issues on a black Wednesday for President Javier Milei.

The ruling party that supports him lost all the votes in a revolted lower house in which the firm opposition was joined by legislators of the Radical Civic Union and the PRO who had been supporting the executive, but were turned away by party internal issues and an increasingly evident reality.

In the opinion of today’s political analysts, the Chamber of Deputies handed one of the toughest parliamentary defeats to Javier Milei’s government this Wednesday, by a large majority, by uniting to impose its agenda and winning the 12 key votes that took place during a marathon session that lasted until the wee hours of the morning.

First, they approved the bill that grants public universities the necessary funds for their full operation, the salary increase for teaching and non-teaching staff, and the securing of student scholarships.

Then, they approved the Pediatric Emergency, which contemplates the increase in the salaries of doctors, residents, nurses and auxiliary personnel of Dr. Garrahan Hospital, and with it the budget for this national and regional reference institution.
