According to official sources, an investigation into the causes of the accident in which Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Chief Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed died, as well as the vice president of the ruling party (National Democratic Congress), Samuel Sarpong.
The fatalities also include a senior national security adviser and all four crew members. For its part, the Government of Ghana declared the crash of a transport helicopter as a national tragedy.
Military reports indicate that the helicopter tookoff from this capital to the gold mining area in Obuasi, in the Ashanti region, near where its remains were found.
