North-eastern Syria Calls for a decentralized government system

Havana, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) The Conference on the Unity of the Components of Northeast Syria ended today with a call to consolidate the country’s ethnic, religious and cultural diversity and establish a decentralized system of government.

The event, held in the northeastern city of Hasakeh and organized by the Kurdish-Arab militia Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), brought together representatives from different sectors, who called for a democratic constitution that guarantees the effective participation of all components and strengthens social unity.

In their final declaration, the participants called for a comprehensive national conference, a transitional justice process to ensure the safe and dignified return of displaced persons, and open transparent investigations into crimes against humanity committed against the Syrian people, including those committed this year in the coastal region, the province of Sweida and against Christian communities.

The text stressed that the self-government model in force in the north and east of the country is a participatory experience capable of development and that the current constitutional declaration adopted by Damascus does not fully respond to the aspirations of freedom and dignity of the Syrian people, for which it requires revision to broaden the representation.
