Brazil: Bolsonaro’s trial for attempted coup enters final phase

Brasilia, Aug 11 (Prensa Latina) The trial against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and seven other defendants accused of attempting a coup d'etat following the 2022 general elections enters its decisive phase on Monday.

The defense teams have until August 13 to submit their final arguments before the Supreme Federal Court (STF).

The group is accused of violently abolishing the democratic order in Brazil after Bolsonaro was defeated at the polls by current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The defendants include former ministers, military officers, and former security chiefs from the previous administration (2019-2022), all aligned with the far-right former president.

The Attorney General’s Office has already submitted its formal request for convictions for the eight leading suspects.

Supreme Court Minister, Judge Alexandre de Moraes, will be able to cast his vote after receiving all pending defense arguments.

The final decision is expected in September, when the STF could convict or acquit those involved.

Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp, affirmed that he was only following orders from above, with no intention of plotting a coup.

The trial is part of a broader investigation into the January 8, 2023, anti-democratic events.
