Video of execution in Syrian hospital unleashes national outrage

Damascus, Aug 11(Prensa Latina) A video showing the execution of a detainee inside a hospital in the southern province of Sweida today triggered a wave of repudiation in Syria and calls for an exhaustive investigation.

The recording, made on July 16 by a surveillance camera, shows how armed men, allegedly linked to the Ministry of Defense and the Internal Security Forces, forcibly take out one of the arrested, beat him and shoot him at close range, Then dragging his body to another ward of the medical center.

The images also show dozens of people dressed in medical clothing, kneeling inside one of the rooms, under the surveillance of military personnel.

Fadel Abdul Ghani, director of the Syrian Network for Human Rights, stated that the material released would be only a fragment of a larger recording, and indicated that there are strong indications linking the aggressor to the General Security.

In his opinion, the Syrian Public Prosecutor’s Office already has sufficient evidence to arrest the person responsible without waiting for the outcome of the inquiry.

The activist claimed that the entity controlling the hospital was selectively broadcasting certain videos, and pointed out that some of the bodies found in this medical center also belonged to Bedouins and members of the General Security, as well as health workers.

He stressed that the hospital should have been treated as a crime scene, with full forensic procedures.

In a message posted on social media, Abdul Ghani called for all the footage to be released to clarify what happened and pointed out the involvement of various parties in the killings, including members of the General Security, the Sweida Military Council and tribal armed groups.

He also requested the intervention of the UN International Commission of Inquiry, considering that the national body lacks credibility in the face of social rejection.

In turn, the Syrian Ministry of the Interior confirmed that it had reviewed the video and condemned the act ‘with the utmost firmness’, assuring that those responsible will be arrested and prosecuted, ‘regardless of their affiliation’.
