Amman: Trilateral meeting reaffirms commitment to Syrian unity

Amman, Aug 13 (Prensa Latina) Representatives from Syria, Jordan, and the United States held a trilateral meeting in this capital aimed at promoting stability in the southern province of Sweida and supporting the security and unity of this Arab nation.

Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, and US Ambassador to Turkiye and Special Envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack led the encounter, accompanied by technical delegations from the three nations.

The meeting followed talks held in Amman on July 19, focused on consolidating the ceasefire in Sweida, in southern Syria, which has been the scene of clashes and violence in the last few weeks and claimed the lives of at least 1,500 people.

The parties underscored in a joint statement that Sweida, with all local communities, is an inseparable part of the Syrian Arab Republic, and the rights of its population must be guaranteed and preserved in the process of national reconstruction, with full representation and participation in the country’s political, social, and economic life.

Jordan and the United States assessed the measures taken by the Syrian Government, including the opening of thorough investigations to bring those responsible for crimes and violations in Sweida to justice, the willingness to cooperate with relevant United Nations agencies, and the increased flow of humanitarian aid to the entire province.

They also highlighted the beginning of a community reconciliation process and Damascus’s commitment to civil peace, as well as its acceptance of international contributions to facilitate the return of displaced persons to their homes.
