About 638 people were convicted of coup plots in Brazil

Brasilia, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) has tried and convicted 638 people to date for the coup plots that occurred on January 8, 2023, to keep former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro in power.

On that date, marked in black in national history, radical Bolsonaro’s supporters invaded and looted the headquarters of the Three Powers in this capital.

According to figures provided by the office of Judge Alexandre de Moraes, the rapporteur of the cases at the STF, 552 other individuals admitted to committing less serious crimes reached an agreement with the Attorney General’s Office and avoided serving pretrial detention sentences. Ten defendants were acquitted.

About 29 people are currently in provisional detention, and 112 are serving definitive prison sentences; that is, their trials have concluded, and they are in the process of serving their sentences.

Forty-four other individuals, whether under investigation or accused, remain under house arrest, with or without electronic anklets.

The Supreme Court has requested the extradition of 61 citizens.

To date, the Supreme Court has opened 1,628 criminal cases related to the January 8, 2023, event, 518 of which were serious crimes and 1,110 others were lesser ones.

There are still 112 cases pending trial, which must be analyzed in the coming months. The remaining legal proceedings are in the evidentiary phase.
