US mercenary force plans to occupy Haiti for 10 years

Port-au-Prince, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) A US security company, Vectus Global, announced it would occupy Haiti for a decade, with the goal of combating the gangs that currently control almost the entire capital.

Company owner Erik Prince explained that once the contractors, known internationally as mercenaries, stabilize the Caribbean nation, they will participate in the design and implementation of a program to tax imported goods at the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Prince expressed hope for regaining control of the main highways and territory from the gangs within approximately a year.

“For me, one of the main indicators of success will be being able to travel from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haitien in a light vehicle without being stopped by the gangs,” Prince was quoted as saying by the online newspaper Gazette Haiti News.

The founder of Blackwater Worldwide remained silent on how much the Haitian government will pay Vectus Global.

The source remembers that Vectus Global began operating in Haiti in March, primarily deploying drones in coordination with a task force led by Prime Minister Alix Didier, but its long-term commitment and involvement in tax collection have always been kept secret.

The US-led mercenary force will also be comprised of Europeans and Salvadorans, trained as snipers and intelligence and communications specialists, as well as naval and helicopter assets.

The director of the Center for Analysis and Research on Human Rights in Haiti, Gedeon Jean —quoted by Gazette Haiti News— warned that the use of private military companies cannot be considered a solution to insecurity, as they have often committed human rights violations.
